The Metaist Meta-Video Of All Meta-Time

Weezer "Pork and Beans"

Please watch this and help us figure out whether it's genius or cheap pandering. We honestly couldn't give a crap about Weezer's music these days, but this video is absolutely fascinating. Several of YouTube's biggest "stars" are brought on board to tie old media and new media together in a big old orgy of attention grabbers.

The following video was included in this article:

Presumably everyone wins because everyone invovled gets exposed to everyone else's fan base. We're very impressed with Weezer's evident juice, because all these people actually sing along. Rivers Cuomo hugs the Britney Spears freak-out guy. They play to a backdrop of the Mentos and Coke explosion stunt. And, in a perhaps surprising willingness to self-parody, Miss Teen South Carolina of "I personally believe U.S. Americans cannot do so because some people out there in our nation don't have maps" fame comes back to the online digital video stage.

But we think it's telling that while we recognize all of the participants, we still don't know their actual names, and haven't spent any dollars to support any of their careers. The Weeze, though, may have convinced us to drop a few dimes on their new "Red Album." We just can't figure out whether this is brilliant or lame.

Discussion
  • Is it possible to be both lame and genius at the same time? Lamely genius? I do think that this video is far more interesting than any of the original videos these people are "famous" for.

  • Ok, I've thought about it and I'm voting for genius. Here's why: everyone will recognize at least one of these youtube videos. People usually learn about these videos from their friends, in small intimate settings or through a recommendation. So people associate these youtube videos with personal connections through intimate media sharing, yet Weezer is a major media band. It makes people feel invested in this music video, as if you're feeling like you're in on a secret.

  • I love Weezer, but ever since Maladroit, they've been on a downward spiral. Although I did enjoy Make Beleive.

  • Wow, I'm actually really surprised at how good the song is. I adore the Blue Album and Pinkerton (Green Album is pretty good, too), but I can't stand their more recent work. This album could actually turn out well. As for the video, it's pretty good. Not quite lame and definitely not genius, but a fun video.

  • I thought the video was hilarious and I generally hate music videos. I love Weezer, but they need to get a little more creative with their album titles.

  • This is good, but it's no Buddy Holly music video. The album maybe pretty good, I'm hoping, but it won't be any Blue Album.

  • it's odd, because weezer basically occupies the same spot in my conscious as the fat singing kid - both are there, if you were to bring either up I would know what you are talking about, but both are incredibly meaningless. for me at least, this video captures weezer in their essence.

  • I'm with Alex Cameron. The Buddy Holly video sucked, so if that was their high point, yikes. On the topic of the real Buddy Holly, one of my uncles told me (time and again) about Holly's stranglehold on the radio, and the day he, the Big Bopper and Richie Valens went down in the plane crash. Holly's catalog for such a young guy is incredible. It's hard to imagine today anyone that young writing and performing and recording so many songs. It's hard to imagine that Bob Dylan was just 25 when Blonde on Blonde came out.

  • Music videos have always been meaningless though. Some are just more meaningless than others.

  • It should be noted that this is the same band that made MAKE BELIEVE. This is leagues better than that stinker and its shit songs.
